multimedia installation in collaboration with Lieve Prins, Zaragoza Spain
When Lieve Prins was asked by Paco Simon to participate in Cambio Constante V she wanted to do something with the terrorist bombing which happened the previous time when she was working in Spain. After the bombing large crowds of people filled the streets of Spain with their hands painted white and raised in the air as a sign of innocence en vulnerability, which made a huge impression on Lieve. When talking to me about this we came up with the idea to cast white hands and to let them grow out of flowerpots as a sign of hope and a new beginning and decided to do the project together. We casted all the hands on location in Zaragoza. The location in the old basement of the Parafino building was a gift, the architecture of the space became a part of the installation. The whole installation was lit by one single lightbulb just above the ground with all the hands circling around it like satellites around a small sun. We made a soundscape of old religious Spanish music mixed with old religious Arab music, in the centre we placed an umbrella with a headphone. When standing under the umbrella with the headphone on the religious sounds were muffled and the only thing what was left was the soft ticking of rain.
