Gothic fiction originated in the 18th century and is known for it’s dark romantic stories like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Bram Stokers Dracula and the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Gothic got a revival in the 20th century in American super hero comics and horror movies. In my 21th century version of Gotham (the dark gothic version of New York) I replaced the usual villains with gay and androgynous party people and Andy Warhol to film everything. I’ve lent the title American Gothic from the famous painting by Grant Wood which was also used in the androgynous gothic musical the Rocky Horror Picture Show what somehow closes the circle.
