In the 15th century city rights came with a lot of privileges but to be granted the right to call yourself a city also ment you had the obligation to surround the city with a city wall and to build city gates. Because Nijkerk wasn’t rich enough to build walls and gates of stone they choose to make walls of earth and build wooden gates. Unfortunately none of the city gates survived the ages. Nijkerk now has the plan to recreate a series of city gates; “de Poorten van Nijkerk”. This is going to be the first gate. Light will be an important element of the design. In the day time light and shadows will play with the cut out shapes in the Corten steel gates, after dark the cut out shapes will be illuminated from the inside.
